CFIT Recommendations

CFIT Recommendation: Leveraging EPDs to improve Scope 3 emissions reporting in ICT procurement

The Recommendation calls on procuring organisations to require suppliers to provide third party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for ICT hardware. Embedding EPD requirements at tender stage, and verifying them during contract management, strengthens the quality of Scope 3 data used for monitoring and reporting. It also increases transparency in the ICT supply chain and encourages manufacturers to measure and disclose product level environmental impacts.

It explains not only why this is recommended, but also includes concrete examples of how procuring organisations can make use of ISO 14024 ecolabels in procurement to select products that are favourable from a sustainability perspective.

CFIT Framework for Circular and Fair ICT Procurement

A CFIT working group has outlined what Circular and Fair Procurement of ICT means to its participants. Besides defining ambitions around four core themes, the working group also discussed key strategies for procuring organizations to work towards these ambitions. The strategies are:

  • Buy less, Buy better, Use better, Use longer.

For each strategy, commitments have been formulated, which CFIT participants will consider as part of their procurement strategies.

CFIT Mini Guide: Practical Strategies for Lifetime Extension of ICT

Every year that a device is kept in use avoids the environmental and financial costs of manufacturing a new one. With the right strategies in place, public buyers can extend the life of their ICT fleet and reduce emissions, costs, and waste. This guide shows how procuring organizations can embed lifetime extension into every phase of the CFIT procurement cycle.
